Malta’s iconic Caffe Cordina is officially here to stay, the Cordina family have confirmed with WhosWho.mt. This newsroom reached out to the beloved café following unsubstantiated reports that it was up for sale. “No, it is absolutely not,” say the Cordina family in a categorical and straightforward reply.

The coffee shop, located in an old palazzo in the bustling streets of Valletta, occupies a special place in the hearts of local and foreign visitors alike. Under pre-COVID conditions, the café was graced with countless tourists, stopping for a break in between catching Valletta’s historic monuments and attractions.

Its Valletta location is not the original, however. In 1837, the Cordinas opened a confectionary in Cospicua (Bormla), which specialized in the baking and preparation of traditional Maltese sweet delicacies.

It relocated to Valletta in 1944 by the late Cesare Cordina, forefather of the present family. Over the years, he enlarged the establishment, resulting in the Caffe Cordina present today.

The coffee shop is known to be bustling with professionals working in Valletta thanks to the numerous legal firms located in the Capital, and, as previously mentioned, is a hot-spot for tourists.

Caffe Cordina has not been spared from pandemic-related challenges. With most office staff working from home, minimal cruise ships and a dramatic drop in tourist arrivals, the coffee shop has felt the hit.

Undeterred by the current challenges, Caffe Cordina continued to invest in the business, including new state-of-the-art coffee machines – a welcome move for all coffee lovers in the Capital – and a new blockchain-based ordering system. This besides having launched a brand new mouth-watering food menu last October.

Caffe Cordina confirmed that Easter preparations are in full swing, with the coffee shop’s staff preparing Easter hampers which include figolli (traditional Maltese Easter sweet) and delectable wines.

One can find the Caffe’s deserts, apart from at its Valletta location, at Smart Supermarket, Birkirkara, and Guido Vella Cash and Carry, Qormi. Moreover, all of the cafe’s well known sweet packaged delicacies can be ordered through Malta’s most popular food delivery services.
