Mediterranean ObserverCommemorating World Tourism Day on September 27, new Eurostat data has been published, revealing that the EU recorded 780.1 million overnight stays in tourist accommodations during the second quarter of 2024, a slight 0.2% increase from the same period in 2023.
While April saw an 8.7% decrease, May had a 7.9% rise, and June remained steady. Luxembourg and Malta showed the largest percentage gains, while Spain and Greece had the most growth in absolute numbers.
International tourism increased by 3.1%, with Luxembourg, Malta, and Romania leading.
Hotels and vacation rentals saw slight increases of 0.9% and 1.1%, and the first half of 2024 reached a record 1.2 billion overnight stays.

* This modest increase, along with a percentage decrease in ten countries, can likely be attributed to the differing timing of Easter holidays in the two reference years (Easter in April 2023 and in March 2024).
