Budget carrier easyJet will start a new, twice-weekly service from Liverpool to Malta next month.

The Mediterranean island of Malta is currently on the green list of destinations that passengers can travel to without needing to self-isolate for 10 days on their return.

Flights will start on July 25 in time for the peak summer holiday period, departing from Liverpool on Tuesdays and Sundays. EasyJet holidays are available from £301 per person.

The airline has now put more than 116,000 additional seats on sale to new green list destinations this summer.

It has already launched two new routes from Malta to Bristol and Luton, which will now take off a week earlier than initially planned in response to demand.

Flights from Bristol to Malta will launch on July 2, operating twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays, and Luton to Malta will launch on July 4, operating twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays.

Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK country manager, said: “We welcome these additions to the green list and in response we have put even more seats on sale to new and existing routes to green destinations. This includes a brand-new route from Liverpool to Malta, meaning we now have over a million seats operating to current European green list destinations this summer.

“And with two thirds of UK adults expected to be double jabbed by July 19, now is the time to let British citizens take advantage of the success of the vaccination programme so we urge the government to move quickly to remove quarantine and testing for fully vaccinated people travelling from amber and green countries.

“This is overdue and unless testing is also removed, flying could become the preserve of the rich again.”

Paul Winfield, Liverpool John Lennon Airport’s director of aviation development, said: “We continue to work closely with our airline partners looking at ways to offer passengers across the region the best opportunities to still be able to head off in search of some much-needed summer sun and we are therefore delighted that easyJet have now chosen to add Malta to their list of destinations available this summer from Liverpool.

“As a destination on the green list, passengers can travel to Malta and return home without the need to quarantine based upon the current travel restrictions.”

The Maltese authorities will only accept a paper version of the NHS Covid letter as proof of vaccination from UK arrivals.

UK travellers to Malta now have to show evidence of a negative PCR test and proof of full vaccination. The vaccination certificate will be not accepted in digital or downloaded PDF form.
