Sustainable Ecotourism Awareness Project Highlighted at MHRA Hospitality Seminar

The Sustainable Ecotourism Awareness (SEA) Project was mentioned to MHRA members and industry stakeholders during the MHRA BOV Deloitte Quarter 4 2025 Hospitality Performance Presentation, held on Friday 20th February 2026 at The Fortress, Corinthia Hotel St George’s Bay.

The seminar brought together leading representatives from Malta’s tourism and hospitality industry to review the performance of the sector during 2025 and discuss the future direction of tourism development in Malta and Gozo.

During the event, participants were addressed by Hon. Dr Ian Borg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, and Tony Zahra, President of MHRA. The quarterly performance survey was presented by David Delicata, Transportation, Hospitality & Services Leader at Deloitte Malta.

The survey highlighted another record year for Maltese tourism, with tourist expenditure surpassing €3.9 billion and guest nights exceeding 25.4 million during 2025, confirming Malta among the strongest performing tourism destinations in Europe. Discussions throughout the seminar focused on sustainable growth, year-round tourism, quality experiences, industry competitiveness, accessibility, and the importance of attracting higher value tourism segments.

During the panel discussion, the SEA Project was highlighted to MHRA members, hospitality operators, and stakeholders attending the event. The project places emphasis on strengthening awareness around sustainable ecotourism practices and encouraging more responsible tourism approaches across Mediterranean destinations.

The presentation highlighted the importance of balancing tourism growth with environmental responsibility, while supporting long-term resilience within the hospitality sector. Participants were informed about the project’s objectives, which include increasing awareness of sustainable tourism principles, encouraging environmentally conscious practices, and promoting stronger collaboration between tourism stakeholders.

The SEA Project continues to support discussions that contribute towards a more sustainable and resilient tourism industry, aligned with evolving European and Mediterranean tourism priorities.

The project is co-funded by the European Union and will run until August 2028
