MHRA Welcomes Random Drug and Alcohol Testing and Mandatory Prison Sentences for Fatalities

The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) strongly supports the newly announced measures introducing random roadside testing for drugs and alcohol, alongside mandatory prison sentences in cases involving fatalities.

MHRA has long advocated for a zero-tolerance approach to drug and alcohol abuse, recognising that safety and security are decisive success factors for Malta’s aspiration to position itself as a quality tourism destination. Tourists and residents alike must feel assured that Malta provides a safe and orderly environment, free from risks that undermine well-being and public trust.

The introduction of random drug and alcohol testing and the strengthening of penalties for offenders represent a significant step forward in addressing reckless behaviour on the roads and protecting lives. These measures are not only essential for upholding the rule of law but also for reinforcing Malta’s international reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.

MHRA stresses that better sustainable tourism management is inseparable from responsible enforcement and strong deterrents against behaviours that endanger society. These reforms will help ensure a higher standard of living for residents and the local community, while delivering outstanding, safe experiences for even the most discerning tourists.
