Malta | COVID-19 Restrictions to ease for Restaurants, Bars that accept only people with Vaccine Certificates

A number of Covid-19 restrictions are going to be relaxed next week, Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne announced on Tuesday.

For restaurants, bars and band clubs (kazini) that voluntarily accept only fully vaccinated people in possession of a recognised vaccine certificate, a number of restrictions will be eased.

For such establishments, the distance between tables indoors will be reduced to from 2m to 1.5m, and from 2m to 1m outdoors. The number of people seated at a table in these establishments will rise from 6 pax to 8 pax, those that play music can raise the sound limit to 80 decibels and their opening hours (should their license permit it) can be extended from 2am to 3am. All staff in the establishments must be fully vaccinated. Such establishments that are restricted to a waiter service, will be able to have a controlled bar service, meaning, for example, that Perspex must be installed between the people serving and those ordering.

He stressed that these above relaxed measures only apply to said establishments that voluntarily only accept fully vaccinated people, and not unvaccinated persons. Eligible establishments can start applying from tomorrow for the measures to come into effect in the second weekend of October.

Fearne also said that some countries from which Malta recognises a COVID-19 vaccine certificate, issue only one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to people who previously had COVID-19.

He said that from 1 October, Malta will start to accept such certificates.

From tomorrow, Malta will also start accepting COVID vaccine certificates from Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Rwanda.
