The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) expresses its deep concern following media reports today of an incident in St Julian’s in which residents reported being subjected to intimidation, shouting and aggressive behaviour by a group of individuals.
Those responsible must be identified, apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Malta proudly welcomes millions of visitors every year, the overwhelming majority of whom respect our country, our people and our laws. They remain most welcome. However, anyone who comes to Malta to behave like a thug, intimidate others or engage in violence has no place in our country.
MHRA works closely with the Malta Police Force, recognising that collaboration is key, and fully supports the actions being taken on this front. We are confident that every effort will be made to bring those responsible to justice and to reinforce the message that criminal behaviour will not be tolerated in Malta’s tourism areas.
This must send a clear message, both locally and internationally: Malta will always welcome responsible visitors, but there will be zero tolerance for violence, intimidation or criminal behaviour. If we truly aspire to attract quality tourism, then we must equally demonstrate that respect for our communities and the rule of law is non-negotiable.
The reckless actions of a small minority must never be allowed to tarnish Malta’s reputation or threaten an industry that lies at the heart of our economy and provides the livelihood of thousands of Maltese and Gozitan families.Strong enforcement is essential to protect our communities, preserve Malta’s international reputation and reinforce confidence that Malta remains a safe, orderly and welcoming destination.
The message is unequivocal: everyone is welcome in Malta, provided they respect our people, our laws and our way of life. Thugs are not.
