The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) fully supports the urgent appeal made by Dr. Jonathan Joslin, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, for the introduction of random roadside testing for alcohol and drugs. His frontline experience treating victims of road accidents leaves no doubt, this measure saves lives and prevents tragedies.
MHRA stresses that for a country like Malta, where tourism is a cornerstone of the economy, safety is not optional, it is essential. A safe environment on our roads is just as important as the quality of our hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Tourists choose destinations where they can enjoy themselves with peace of mind, and residents deserve the same assurance every day.
By implementing random roadside testing, Malta would send a clear message: this is a country where people can live well, visit confidently, and enjoy responsibly. Such measures do not restrict enjoyment, they raise the standard of living and hospitality for everyone.
Parliament now has the responsibility to act decisively. Introducing this law would align Malta with best international practice, demonstrate leadership, and strengthen Malta’s image as a modern, safe, and welcoming destination.
MHRA calls on Government and Members of Parliament to heed Dr. Joslin’s call. The time for action is now. A safer Malta is a stronger Malta, for its people, and for every visitor who chooses these islands.
