Not all of us want to spend our Christmases in coats and scarves. Some of us want a taste of the seemingly distant summer while still enjoying the cool December air, and no corner of the world can offer this if not the Mediterranean.

If you are still unsure as to where to have your ‘summer holiday in winter’, these Mediterranean hotspots should certainly be ones to consider.

Greece

Save the islands for your summer trip. All of Greece’s ancient sites such as Delphi and Corinth are much less busy during the winter months, meaning you can stroll through as often as you like with minimal interruption. Don’t forget your sunglasses, as Mediterranean countries enjoy crisp winters with quite the amount of sunshine to go around

Spain

Spain is a classic choice here. While it might be wise to avoid the Northern coast due to high chances of rain, you have an endless choice of sunny city breaks, from Barcelona to Malaga or to Granada. Spain’s most popular city options also have airports nearby, so it is much easier for one to get around.

Slovenia

The home to Lake Bled is ideal for a cosy winter getaway while still catching some glorious sunshine. A stay in Ljubljana also gives you easy access to northern Italian cities like Milan and Trieste, but if you’re up for a more scenic getaway, we would recommend combining Slovenia with Zagreb.

The French Riviera

You can never go wrong with the south of France. Avignon, Nice, Marseilles, or Cannes are all perfect destinations for a short winter re-charge while sipping on red wine and watching the world go by. Nearby airports are not so busy this time of year and chances are the area’s top accommodations offer special prices for winter trips.

Portugal

Top cities like Porto or Lisbon are at their most popular in the late autumn, but most airlines offer cheaper flight selections to areas such as Lagos or Faro, further south. Portugal offers the best of both worlds, so if you suddenly find yourself craving rain and grey skies, a train to Porto is always just around the corner.
