On 3rd October 2024, the European Labour Authority launched its report on the HORECA sector.
The report focuses on the following main topics:
- The horeca sector in the economy of the EU
- The labour market in the sector in the EU
- Recruitment in the sector in the EU
- Employment and working conditions
- Enforcing labour law and EU labour mobility rules.
Main observations:
- It is noted that the hospitality sector is significantly affected by seasonality, with increased demand during peak seasons and special occasions. As a result, various contract types are required to meet these needs.
- Low wages are a common feature of the industry, but this is attributed to the need for low-skilled workers and the sector’s generally low profit margins.
- While some migrants may be overqualified, it is emphasized that the industry is inclusive, offering opportunities for both skilled and unskilled individuals.
- Extended working hours, especially during peak periods, are a response to high consumer demand and are generally allowed by national laws or collective agreements.
