European Commission designates Booking.com as gatekeeper

The European Commission has designated Booking Holdings, the parent company of Booking.com, as a gatekeeper platform under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Booking.com now has six months to comply with the DMA’s requirements.

Booking Holdings has been preventing hotels from offering better prices on their own channels and not sharing sufficient data with hotel partners. These issues are expected to be addressed with the gatekeeper designation.

HOTREC President Alexandros Vassilikos emphasized that the DMA is a game changer after a decade-long struggle between hotels and Booking.com. Markus Luthe, Managing Director of the German Hotel Association, stressed the importance of ensuring compliance and proper consultation with stakeholders.
