EU Tourism Trends | Q1 2025 (Eurostat Highlights)

General Overview

  • A total of 452.4 million overnight stays were recorded across EU tourist accommodations in Q1 2025.

  • This marks a modest decline of 0.2% compared to the same period in 2024.

Monthly Performance

  • January: 139.0 million stays (+3.5% vs Jan 2024)

  • February: 147.7 million stays (-0.8% vs Feb 2024)

  • March: 167.7 million stays (-2.7% vs Mar 2024)

  • These small downturns are largely due to calendar shifts, notably:

    • Carnival holidays moving from February to March

    • Easter moving from March (2024) to April (2025)

International vs Domestic Tourism

  • Foreign tourists made up 45.6% of all overnight stays, a 1.1% increase from Q1 2024

  • Domestic tourism slightly declined by 1.3%

Country Highlights – Foreign Share of Overnight Stays

  • Top 3 countries with the highest share of foreign tourists:

    • Malta: 91.2%

    • Cyprus: 85.7%

    • Luxembourg: 80.4%

  • Lowest shares among:

    • Poland: 18.6%

    • Romania: 20.1%

    • Germany: 20.2%

Largest Increases in Foreign Tourism

  • Latvia: +18.5%

  • Malta: +17.2%

  • Finland: +10.6%

Sharpest Drops in Foreign Tourism

  • Ireland: -23.1%

  • Croatia: -16.7%

  • Sweden: -11.5%
